| Wildlife Conservation needs an Economic Approach and a Global Platform |
The 59th General Assembly of the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) in Cape Town, South Africa was organized with the assistance of the Professional Hunters Association of South Africa (PHASA), the international congress aimed to put forward the very timely issue of the economic contribution of sustainable wildlife management.

The present efforts by a number of European and US based animal rights’ groups to stop selective and sustainable lion hunting is counterproductive for the survival of these magnificent large cats in the wild.

Stephen Oxenbury will be the official CIC photographer for this year’s upcoming Rovos rail journey from Pretoria to Cape Town (4-6 of May 2012) and the 59th CIC General Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa. He is delighted to be invited to travel with the CIC members on the train journey and to accompany the participants with his camera.

During recent weeks there have been some misinterpretations in the media surrounding the sustainability of elephant hunting in certain southern African countries. The CIC noted these misleading judgements with deep concern. The current conservation status of elephant populations in the region speaks for itself and shows the positive role of sustainable hunting, fully in line with the principles of Convention on Biological Diversity.

The spring meeting of the German Delegation of the CIC took place in Wiesbaden on 31 March 2012. The main topic discussed was the potential fundamental changes to hunting rights in Germany.
