Sustainable Use Commission
The Commission's very name is synonymous with the work of international bodies like the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), CITES, the Bonn Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), etc. These international organizations continually define, regulate, and implement the sustainable use of wild natural wildlife and plants. The Sustainable Use Commission is intimately involved with the evolving definition of sustainable use in the regulation of trade under CITES particularly trade in hunting trophies. Furthermore, it is participating in the respective development within the IUCN's Sustainable Use Specialist Group and other international and regional forums alike.
The CSU is active in the development and implementation of best practices for sustainable tourist hunting. Members have helped organize and have participated in a series of continuing workshops on sustainable hunting tourism in Brussels, London and RSA. We participated in the African lion workshops in Douala for West and Central Africa and in Randberg for South and East Africa. We've helped produced the Hunters Guide to Aging African Lion in Eastern and Southern Africa to aid in better hunting practices in the critical role that tourist hunting plays in the conservation of the African lion. Other projects are underway.
CIC's Edmond Blanc Prize selects and recognizes outstanding projects and programs. The CSU further selects and broadcasts those that are suitable models of sustainable use for others to follow.
President of the Commission: Mr. John J. Jackson
