Waterbirds Around the World

On 12 March 2007 a significant publication, Waterbirds Around the World has been launched by the Dutch and UK Ministers of the Environment.

CIC’s Migratory Birds Commission was one of the sponsors and contributors that supported a global flyways conference held under the same title in Edinburgh in April 2004. The congress was a historical event attracting almost 500 scientists from all over the world.

The conference proceedings that contains contributions from 453 authors from 59 countries – resulting in 264 papers and reviews relating to 614 waterbird species from 162 countries – gives a unique overview of the status of the world’s waterbirds at the start of a new millennium. While providing new information on birds, their habitat and the threats, the book also documents numerous success stories and conservation best practice including the role of sustainable use and local communities.

The CIC would like to draw attention to the numerous conservation problems reviewed in the book, which face us all in responding to the challenge of the 2010 biodiversity target to halt and reverse wetland loss and degradation, and to strengthen networks of key sites for waterbirds along all flyways.

You can read online or download various chapters of the book Waterbirds around the World or you can order a printed copy directly form the Stationary Office.
